Greek dramatist, widely regarded as the
founder of Greek tragedy. By the
introduction of a second actor he made true
dialogue and dramatic action possible.
Aeschylus wrote some 90 plays between 499 and
458 BC, of which seven survive. These are The
Suppliant Women performed about 490 BC, The
Persians 472 BC, Seven against Thebes 467 BC,
Prometheus Bound (about 460 BC) and the
Oresteia trilogy 458 BC. Aeschylus was born
at Eleusis, near Athens, of a noble family.
He took part in the Persian Wars and fought
at Marathon (490 BC). He twice visited the
court of Hieron I, king of Syracuse, and died
at Gela in Sicily.
